We need to be tough on crime but in an intelligent way. Too many Americans are in prison serving extremely long sentences for petty crimes, like drug use.
This is counterproductive. Locking up drug addicts won’t solve our problems.
America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. While the United States represents only 4.4% of the world’s population, it houses around 22% of the world’s prisoners. The result is that our prisons are overcrowded and poorly run, and it is costing American tax payers billions of dollars.
Instead of punishing petty criminals with long sentences, we need to focus on rehabilitation and drug treatment programs, which are proven to work.
We also need to take the profit out of prisons. Privately run prisons which seek to keep convicts incarcerated longer so they can boost profits should lose their license.
Anything short of this is a crime in itself.
